ProCon Latte Review
ProCon Latte is a personal content filtering application that lets you block access to websites containing explicit material, limit Internet browsing to a Whitelist of approved sites, and protect against unsuitable content. It also includes a profanity filter that replaces words you consider inappropriate with placeholder text.
The interface is easy to use and provides multiple tabs for setting up your filters, with clearly labeled options in each. The program is also password protected, preventing other users from changing the settings.
Its main filtering feature is a simple blacklist/whitelist system that can be configured to allow or deny access to Web pages by analyzing keywords and phrases in a page's text. It also has a Wildcards feature that can be used to identify patterns in keywords and phrases.
There are some limitations to this filtering system, however. It's not as precise or as accurate as some more sophisticated filtering tools, but it's still effective enough to help keep children away from pornographic content and other undesirable Web sites.
Aside from the main filtering features, there is a profanity filter that will automatically replace offensive words with asterisks. This is a useful feature if you have young children, or if you are worried about false positives.
The program offers a variety of other features, including a password protection mechanism that prevents other users from altering the settings and the ability to lock access to about:config, so that only authenticated users can change or disable the filter. It's also cross-platform ready, and works with Firefox 2.x to 3.x.
